Feast your eyes on a 2004 GT3 at my local Porsche dealer. We were there looking at used Cayennes, but this one pulled me in. I'm not a fan of the headlights on the 996, but this beast is incredibly tempting. $62,458.00.

$62k for a 33k mile car seems pretty good. I'm sure it's slightly inflated, it's at a dealer after all, but this type of car needs the right buyer.

So, NPOCP?

considering 996 turbo's that are in great condition with this kind of milage fetch around $40,000 I'd say it is a NP. I'd buy it if I could. . .

They have a 2007 Turbo with $42k miles for $72k. My thought on the GT3 is whether the special parts would be ridiculously expensive vs just being outrageously expensive for more pedestrian 911s.

I would say more like 55k but 62k isn't bad at all!

Considering you can find a much more beloved 997 GT3 for only 15k more, I wouldn't pull the trigger. Great car, though.

It's hard for me to justify that kind of money for a 996. They're just so....sterile. I understand that they're very capable cars, but they're positively snoozing visually. Maybe I'm shallow. But that would buy one hell of a 993 turbo.

I don't think you're shallow. I don't know what they were thinking with that front end. They make conversions, but then the owner becomes some sort of wanna-be, if that's possible with a GT3!

I'm not serious about this one. The Cayenne is the priority this year. The 911 or Cayman S comes next, but man this gave me ideas about what I might look for.

I honestly hate the slab sides more than the front end. A GT3 deserves big, absurd curves.

I think they are about the same in the cost of ownership department. But I'd go for the GT3. The GT3 is the batshit crazy 911 its worth it.

$62k will buy you a 996 Turbo and a lot of money for upgrades.

Nice Price all the way!

I think this is a nice price, but I wish it was cheaper. It's hard to justify this kind of money for a 10 yr old car whose base versions (which, let's be honest, are largely similar in many crucial areas - styling, interior, etc.) are selling for $19,995 at the kind of used car dealer who thinks it's acceptable to advertise a car for $19,995.

If I found a clean one of these in the 40s, it would replace my Cadillac. That will never happen though. And for this money I'd rather spend a bit extra and get a 997 TT. Or save a lot and get a 996 TT.

Thanks for sharing, Dan. A visit to the used GT3 market on AutoTrader.com will be necessary before I go to sleep tonight!

Personally, I'd rather go for a 997 Turbo. I'm just not a huge fan of the 996. But if the Cayenne is what you're looking for, make sure you opt for a GTS!

Good points Doug. I'm still toying with the idea of a brand new Cayman S in a few years. It's hard to say. It depends on my job. It's going well. A Cayenne is within 12 months I'd say though - for my wife.

Ahhh, I live in Colorado and would like to take it on fire roads. I'm really interested in seeing what happens to their prices when the Macan comes out.

Are there any other cars you're seriously considering besides the Cayenne?

What year and trim?

We'd ideally like a 2010, probably anything from a Base Cayenne, but probably with a V8. The S models are pretty reasonably priced. We need to go in a test drive one, but we've been too busy. Probably in late September we'll go back to the dealer to drive one to make sure my Hobbitesque wife can see over the steering wheel, etc...

Not really. What are your ideas?

Not a 2011?! If that's the case, the '08 looks the same as the '10 as I'm sure you know... and they're all offered at Carmax with a six year warranty :)

Purely out of curiosity. Why not a Land Rover?!

She wants a Porsche. I have trust issues with Land Rover.

Hmm, well, in the segment there is the ML, Touareg, Q7, LandRovers/RangeRovers, X5, and XC90. This would be my preference, in order. LR/RR's, Touareg, Q7, XC90, Cayenne, X5, ML.

Kinja'd!!!1

We don't care for MB's in general.

The Touareg is boring looking (I realize it's the same platform)

Q7 - maybe

Land Rover - we need it to be reliable (if we had the Defender here, maybe)

Volvo? I don't even have any Birkenstocks.

X5 - I have a BMW, but the X5 has no off-road capability (we live in Colorado)

I'm not really a fan of most MB's either.

Touareg, I kinda like the simplicity of it. Also from what I understand they're pretty capable. Especially if you're able to find one with a air suspension, which you probably won't. Even better if you can get a TDi.

Land Rover, I am biased.

XC90s are cool.

X5's, yeah, not great off road.
